Canberra MRT Station (NS12) is an above-ground station along the North South Line (NSL) which opened on 2 November 2019. It is located along Canberra Link, at the junction with Canberra Way.

Named after the capital city of Australia, nearby areas were given Western names owing to an old British Naval Base along the northern coast. It is the second MRT station to have been built on an existing train line (infill station), the other being Dover station which opened in 2001. Four exits are built at ground level, and a fifth exit is built at platform level, linking the city-bound train platform with an overhead bridge that spans over Canberra Link.

Construction work started in March 2016 and the station was opened on 2 November 2019. The station serves nearby estates such as Sembawang Springs, as well as upcoming residential developments.

Design

Architectural design work was performed by DP Architects. The design references nautical imagery and movement, drawing from the region’s role as a naval base. Passenger areas are kept open and inviting with natural daylight streaming in through glass façades, while louvres bring in natural ventilation yet protecting against wind-driven rain. Landscaping is also thoughtfully incorporated into the design through the integration of planters along the periphery of the platform and a green roof over the station’s covered linkway.

Canberra station has two elevated North South Line platforms in a side platform arrangement. Half-height Platform screen doors are installed at the platform edge for the safety of commuters, and high-volume low-speed fans keep passengers cool. Built at least twenty years after neighbouring North South Line stations, Dover station features a much more modern design, with a large roof suspended over the tracks, and glass façades allowing natural light into reach into the interior.

Passenger Information Systems, which are plasma display screens located at each platform, display expected train arrival times and key messages. Tactile flooring helps to guide the visually-handicapped from the platform to station exits. Escalators, lifts and stairs connect the Platform level to the Ticket Concourse level below.

At-grade direct access to Platform B is possible from the link bridge spanning Canberra Link, via faregates at the same level.

Concourse

The station has two ticket concourses located at ground level (North and South end). They feature faregates for automatic fare collection and provide access between paid and unpaid areas of the station, with at least one bidirectional wide-swinging gate for the benefit of passengers-in-wheelchairs, and those carrying bulky items or travelling with prams.

General Ticketing Machines allow commuters to purchase tickets for single or multiple journeys, and TransitLink Top Up Machines allow for contactless card transactions. The station office at the North Concourse functions as a Passenger Service Centre, and is staffed during operating hours, where commuters may make travel inquiries.

Link bridge

A link bridge spans across Canberra Link, connecting Exit E directly with Platform B​ for train services towards Marina South Pier​. There are provisions for four retail shops​ along the bridge.

The link bridge will directly connect to Canberra Plaza (Level 2) in the future, via a flight of steps. For step-free access to Canberra Plaza, commuters are required to take the lift between Level 2 (Linkbridge) and Level M (HDB Level 2).

Faregates between the link bridge and the platform are accompanied by TransitLink Top Up Machines. Ticketing machines are only available at ground level.

Art In Transit: “Symbiosis” by Tan Zi Xi

The artwork brings to light the symbiotic relationship between flora and fauna, which provide for and feed from our precious earth. The symbiosis between the two is a reflection of the collaboration between the artist and the community of Canberra, through her re-interpretation of their imagination and sketches of the evolving flora and fauna as they journeyed together through Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Beyond capturing the richness of plant and animal life, the mural manifests how living organisms grow and adapt constantly to the changing environmental landscape caused by man and pollution, like the ebb and flow of the tide.
