Punggol Coast MRT Station (NE18) is a future underground station along the North East Line (NEL) just off Punggol Road. Expected to be completed by Year 2024, it will take over Punggol MRT/LRT Station as the northern terminus of the NEL.

Formally announced on 7 June 2017, the station is part of the 1.6-kilometre long North East Line Extension (NELe). Originally planned for 2030, the completion date has been brought forward to support developments in Punggol North. This includes new residential estates at Northshore District and Punggol Point District, as well as the Punggol Digital District, Singapore’s pilot Enterprise District comprising JTC Corporation’s (JTC) mixed-use developments, and the Singapore Institute of Technology’s (SIT) new campus.

The station is expected to enhance connectivity from Punggol North to the city centre as well as other parts of Singapore. Construction was awarded to CSCEC and began in the first half of 2018.

Alignment

The station will be built just east off Punggol Road in its 2018 alignment, between the junctions of Punggol Way and Ponggol Seventeenth Avenue, as contained in preliminary graphics released by LTA. The stretch of Punggol Road will be transformed into a green corridor in the future, with a realigned road to be built to the East as shown below.

Presently, the North East Line tracks curve westward after Punggol Station, long indicating that a future station might have been built in Punggol West, or extending to the north of Singapore. Existing maps reflect this alignment. However, the new plan for the North East Line Extension (NELe) calls for a station in the east, and hence, the new tunnels curve to the west then to the east, to join with the new station.

In addition, a planned North Shore Extension of the Punggol LRT (PGLRT) has failed to materialized, having been removed from the most recent URA Masterplan (last featured in the 2008 Masterplan). Conceived to serve new developments north of Punggol, it appears that the NELe will take over its role in serving the Punggol Enterprise District.

Construction Trivia

Contract 715 for the Construction of cut and cover and bored tunnels for NEL extension was awarded to China State Construction Engineering Corporation Limited (Singapore Branch) for S$79.0 million on 8 December 2017.

The LTA revealed that for the first time, it adopted the use of design thinking in conceptualising the Punggol Coast station. This saw the agency conducting studies and prototype concepts aimed at improving the commuting experience, before incorporating certain features into the station’s design. For instance, social spaces were conceived for people to interact and meet-up, rather than merely a means of getting from point to point. It also considered a dedicated space where the community, including students, will have a dedicated space to showcase exhibits such as their school projects.

Initially projected for completion in Year 2023, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the opening to Year 2024. This was announced during a visit by Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung on 13 November 2020, at a ceremony to mark the completion of tunnel boring works from the existing Punggol station to the future Punggol Coast station. Around 40% of construction work was completed by then.
