Stevens MRT Station (DT10) is an underground station along the Downtown Line (DTL) Stage 2, located at the junction of Stevens Road and Bukit Timah Road, serving the Stevens area.

The station is located in the vicinity of schools such as Singapore Chinese Girls’ School and St Joseph’s Institution; Raffles Town Club, and other residential developments. By 2021, Stevens station will be an interchange station with the Thomson-East Coast Line, with the station code DT10TE11.

Stevens station has two DTL platforms in a stacked side platform arrangement, with both platforms utilized for trains travelling in either direction. Owing to land constraints arising from building the station next to the Wayang Satu Flyover and Bukit Timah Canal, the stacked platform design was adopted, with the Expo bound and Bukit Panjang bound platforms at Basement 1 and 3 respectively. The TEL platforms are arranged in an island at Basement 2.

Full-height Platform screen doors isolate the air-conditioned station from the tunnel environment, enhancing commuter safety and station comfort. A set of escalators, stairs and lifts connect the various levels of the station. Passenger Information Systems, which are plasma display screens located at each platform, display expected train arrival times and key messages. Tactile flooring helps to guide the visually-handicapped from the platform to the exits of the station.

While all levels are connected by escalators, passengers heading in and out of Platform A (Basement 3) may prefer to take the lift directly to surface level to avoid the hassle of switching between multiple escalators.

Concourse

Unlike typical MRT stations which have a common set of fare gates to the train platforms, the Downtown Line Stevens station has separate sets of fare gates for its two platforms, which are located on the same level as the platform (B1 and B3). The concourse features faregates for automatic fare collection and provides access between paid and unpaid areas of the station, with at least one bidirectional wide-swinging gate for the benefit of passengers-in-wheelchairs and those carrying bulky items or travelling with prams.

General Ticketing Machines allow commuters to purchase tickets for single or multiple journeys, and along with Top-up Machines, offer contactless card transactions. The DTL station office located at Basement 1 is staffed during operating hours, where commuters may make travel inquiries.

This work illustrates existing patterns in nature that constitute an historical dimension of the junctions of Stevens and Bukit Timah. In the 19th century the area was the natural habitat for biodiversity with an expanse of various exotic plantations crops. The manually stamp printed artwork evidences both visual and textural identities, using instances of nutmeg and rubber tree foliage, seeds and fruits. The purpose is to evoke to daily commuters the distinct historical and natural identity of the surrounding area.

Stevens station has two underground Thomson-East Coast Line platforms in an island platform arrangement, expected to open for passenger service in Year 2021.

Underpass

As part of the Thomson-East Coast Line station works, a 65-metre underpass underneath Dunearn Road and Bukit Timah Road was constructed using a rectangular tunnel boring machine connecting Singapore Chinese Girls’ School with Stevens MRT station, which opened on 23 November 2019.

Former Grace Period

From 2 January 2016, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) adjusted the fare system to allow for a 10-minute grace period at Stevens MRT Station. This is for commuters who enter the wrong platform at Stevens station and wish to take the train in the opposite direction can to tap out and re-enter at the correct platform for no additional charge, so long as it is done within 10-minutes.

With a new lift opened on 23 November 2019, the grace period was withdrawn on the same day, and commuters would be charged if they enter and exit at Stevens station.

This lift serves the following levels within the paid area of Stevens MRT Station:

• L1 – Street Level (with Faregates & Top Up Kiosk directly outside lift lobby)
• B1 – Downtown Line Platform B towards Expo
• B2 – Underpass Link (with Faregates & Top Up Kiosk directly outside lift lobby)
• B3 – Downtown Line Platform A towards Bukit Panjang

The lift enables commuters to change DTL platforms at Stevens MRT station without exiting the train network through faregates.

Exits

Stevens MRT station currently has only three exits leading to ground level (A, B & C). Exits B & C were opened on 23 November 2019. Step-free access to/from Exit B is via a lift at Exit C.
Additional exits are currently under construction as part of the Thomson-East Coast Line works.
Along with escalators and stairs, lifts provide barrier-free accessibility for the disabled.

Rail Bridging Services

Passenger Usage Patterns

As a Central district station serving largely housing estates, Stevens station encounters moderate to low demand levels from developments in the vicinity. A number of parallel bus services duplicate the line between Bukit Panjang and Bugis, via the Bukit Timah corridor.

Construction Trivia

Downtown Line Stage 2 (DTL2) Contract 919 for the Design and Construction of Botanic Gardens and Stevens stations and tunnels was awarded to Sembawang Engineers & Constructors Pte Ltd for approximately S$378.2 million in Jul 2009.

Owing to land constraints arising from building the station next to the Wayang Satu Flyover and Bukit Timah Canal, the stacked platform design was adopted. The Thomson-East Coast Line will cut between both platforms, at Basement 4.

Contract T216 for the Construction of Stevens Station and Tunnels for Thomson Line was awarded to Daewoo Engineering and Construction Co; Ltd. at a contract sum of S$441.0 million in April 2014. The Korean company had completed numerous subways, double track line and high speed railroad projects in South Korea, e.g. Daegu Subway Line 2, Seoul Subway Line 7 and Busan Subway Line 3.

Future Developments

The station will be a future interchange station with the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) Stage 3, scheduled to open in 2021.
