On 5 February 2021, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that it would be procuring 17 two-car trains to boost the capacity of the Sengkang and Punggol LRT lines (SPLRT).
These trains would be the third generation of rolling stock for the SPLRT, following two earlier generations of Mitsubishi Crystal Mover LRT trains which were very similar in design. The C810 trains entered service starting in 2003, while the C810A trains progressively entered service from 2016.
When all trains are rolled out, these trains will double the number of two-car trains in the SPLRT fleet, which currently comprises 16 two-car trains and 25 one-car trains.
The contract number for this batch of trains have yet to be confirmed. An earlier version of this article carried the incorrect contract number.
