Tanjong Rhu MRT Station (TE23) is an underground station located along the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) 4. It is built just off Tanjong Rhu Road, at the junction with Tanjong Rhu Place, bringing rail connectivity to the Tanjong Rhu estate and Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The station is in the vicinity of Water Place, Sanctuary Green, Parkshore, Pebble Bay, Casuarina Cove, Camelot By-The-Water and Tanjong Ria Condominium. It also serves the Singapore Indoor Stadium and Sports Hub located across the Geylang River via the Tanjong Rhu Suspension Bridge.

The station was originally targeted for completion and opening in Year 2023. However, it was delayed till 2024 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Tanjong Rhu station has two platforms in a side platform arrangement, with both platforms utilized for trains travelling in either direction.

Heading West from Tanjong Rhu station towards Gardens by the Bay station, trains pass through TE22A Founders’ Memorial station which is scheduled for opening in tandem with Founders’ Memorial itself.

Civil Defence shelter

Tanjong Rhu station is one of seven stations along the Thomson-East Coast Line (East Coast stretch) designated as Civil Defence (CD) shelters, which will be activated in times of national emergency. Apart from reinforced construction, the stations are designed and equipped with facilities to ensure the shelter environment is tolerable for all shelterees during shelter occupation. These facilities include protective blast doors, decontamination facilities, ventilation systems, power and water supply systems and a dry toilet system.

The other CD shelters are Marine Parade, Marine Terrace, Siglap, Bedok South, Bayshore and Sungei Bedok stations.

Construction Trivia

Contract T303 for the Construction of Tanjong Rhu Station and Tunnels for Thomson-East Coast Line was awarded to Bachy Soletanche Singapore Pte Ltd – Wai Fong Construction Pte Ltd Joint Venture (JV) at a contract sum of S$293.9 million in January 2016.

Bachy Soletanche from France were previously involved in the construction of Downtown Line 1 (DTL1)’s Bugis and Telok Ayer stations, and TEL’s Orchard and Gardens By The Bay stations. Wai Fong Construction from Singapore were previously involved in the construction of TEL’s Mount Pleasant Station.
