Woodlands South station has two platforms in an island platform arrangement. Full-height Platform screen doors isolate the air-conditioned station from the tunnel environment, enhancing commuter safety and station comfort. A set of escalators, stairs and lifts connect to the concourse above.
Passenger Information Systems, which are plasma display screens located at each platform, display expected train arrival times and key messages. Tactile flooring helps to guide the visually-handicapped from the platform to the station exits.
As the terminus of the Thomson-East Coast Line (Stage 1), trains from Woodlands arrive at Platform A, which is used for the alighting of passengers only. Trains switch tracks at a set of points further up the line, then re-enter the station on Platform B, picking up passengers before departing for Woodlands.
During the initial operating phase for Thomson-East Coast Line 1, trains would be operating at 10 minutes frequency during peak hours and 15 minutes frequency during off-peak hours.
Concourse
The concourse features faregates for automatic fare collection and provides access between paid and unpaid areas of the station, with at least one bidirectional wide-swinging gate for the benefit of passengers-in-wheelchairs and those carrying bulky items or travelling with prams.
General Ticketing Machines allow commuters to purchase tickets for single or multiple journeys, and along with Top-up Machines, offer contactless card transactions. The station office functions as a Passenger Service Centre, and is staffed during operating hours, where commuters may make travel inquiries.
Art in Transit: “3652 x 50” by Kng Mian Tze
3652 x 50 is a time capsule containing promises that 50 participants made to themselves. Participants who either live, work or study around the Woodlands South station wrote and drew projections of what they intended to achieve in 10 years time. The participatory element of this artwork started in 2013 with the anticipation that by the time the station opened, all participants would have entered into different chapters of their lives. Some may have graduated, married or even brought a new life into being. The daily commute may be seen as merely getting from point A to B, but it also a journey of life. As we traverse our personal destinies/histories each day, we can choose how we want this journey to unfold. 3652 x 50 is a reminder that we all have a part in deciding how our own journeys pan out.
